About Us

Our Story (and Yours?)

Group Shot

While there has been an enormously loud surge (i.e. cover story Time magazine) in the use of HRT (hormone replacement therapy), especially testosterone, we at TBI (The Blend Institute) have been quietly going about our business of providing HRT for men and women for over 15 years.

When we started it wasn't in vogue to use HRT; in fact, we were shunned by many physicians to the point where one gynecologist actually fired some of our patients for using bioidentical HRT.

Like many physicians with a story, mine started with my wife who began experiencing significant perimenopause symptoms at age 37. After unsuccessful treatment from our local gynecologist, she took it upon herself to search out relief.

My wife Kim who has a significant background in medicine from her early years as an intensive care nurse at Mass Gen Hospital, knew something was wrong with her body, and the condescending remarks she got about bioidentical hormones at that time drove her to find a Nurse Practitioner trained in HRT, in Wisconsin, that finally listened and ordered the appropriate testing and treatment.

She asked me "to write her prescription" at the time, which I did out of fear for my life :-)! To my surprise, within 2 weeks many of her symptoms which she had been experiencing (night sweats, irritability, low libido, insomnia, and brain fog) resolved.

I was flabbergasted but intrigued and curious. I spent 4 years in med school and 4 years in training and had no recollection about the standard use of HRT, let alone bioidentical. And my wife had just gone through a transformation that returned her to the women I had remembered.

I began noticing many women with similar symptoms coming to the Emergency Department, with symptoms of anxiety, chest pain and palpitations. After their million-dollar cardiac work up (which, by the way, was probably indicated), they were still symptomatic, upon further history-taking they sounded similar to Kim's symptoms.

When I told them it may be "hormonal." they took it as a condescending remark, which I guess they have been hearing from other physicians and family members. I knew then that I could not treat these women in the ER and opened our first clinic along with my wife who had completed her Master's Degree as Nurse Practitioner in Psychiatry.

We have been studying, lecturing and treating patients now for over 15 years, trying to find natural cures that have fewer side effects than prescription medications, but realize of course that they are sometimes required.

We differ from most traditional practices because we pull out the prescription pad last and try evidence-based alternative therapies first. It is what most patients want and they appreciate our efforts in that regard.

While we treat many conditions in our office, 90% of our patients are offered some form of HRT or Neurotransmitter therapy. Together, Kim and I have the widest range of experience in these modalities. We see and consult with patients across the state and many from outside of Florida.

Finally and most importantly: we do it best.

So if you're a man, woman or transgender that may be having any hormonal (hypothalamic-pituitary -adrenal-gonadal system) concerns you owe it to yourself to visit the best and most experienced clinicians in Florida at The Blend Institute.

Our Team

Timothy Blend, M.D.

Timothy Blend, M.D.

Board certified in Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine and fellowship trained in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine.

At The Blend Institute the majority of patients benefit from some form of BHRT (Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy) either topical, injections or pellet therapy (certified BioTE practitioner).

Thyroid function is optimized through this treatment. Sleep, energy and sexual function are markedly improved with these modalities as well. The use of neurotransmitter therapy further improves all gains made at our clinic.

The B.L.E.N.D. method is an acronym for the individualized therapy that has come from over 50 years of combined medical experience from the co-founders Tim Blend, M.D. and Kim Blend, ARNP.

Some typical conditions and symptoms that we treat include:

  • Menopause
  • Andropause
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Weight loss resistance
  • Insomnia
  • Sport performance optimization
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension

Additionally, we have been very successful in treating mood disorders, anxiety, depression, and PTSD with the use of targeted amino acid therapy.

Credentials/Philosophy of Provider

Kim is a master's degree-prepared, licensed Nurse Practitioner specializing in psychiatry and mental health. Her traditional training, experience and national board certification allow for the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders and treatment with prescription medication management and psychological counseling.

However, her undergraduate work in Human Nutrition brings a unique perspective to her practice.

Rather than view emotional states such as anxiety, depression, attention issues, fatigue, insomnia, etc. as a diagnosis, she prefers to view her clients' experiences from a functional perspective.

What does this mean? For example, rather than label you with a diagnosis of depression, she prefers to view your symptom presentation from a biochemical and psychological perspective.

  1. "Biochemically" are you experiencing a deficiency of serotonin or an elevation of norepinephrine or glutamate in your neurological system that is contributing to your emotional state?
  2. "Psychologically" are you struggling with emotional stresses that are contributing to your emotional state that you might benefit from coaching or counseling?
  3. Perhaps both biochemical and psychological sources are contributing.

She feels it is important to take the time to get to know each of her clients well. In this way she can assure the best treatment for each individual. Based on in-depth information you provide in your initial intake paperwork and her initial evaluation, she will partner with you to develop an individualized plan for treatment.

This may include counseling, neurotransmitter (brain chemical) testing and neurotransmitter balancing with an individualized plan based on your specific symptoms using either natural targeted amino acid therapies or medications.

Treatment decisions will be arrived at with your input to insure your complete understanding and comfort in your treatment.

She is an expert in the area of neurotransmitter testing and amino acid treatment. As a national speaker on the subject, Kim often travels; this includes teaching other clinicians on the utility of neurotransmitter testing and efficacy of amino acid therapies.

Kimberly Blend, ARNP is committed to the use of the most innovative medicine in compassionate partnership with you to enrich your life.
